What G8X MIII is
G8X MIII is a modern pocket compact — Canon G7X / PowerShot G-series lineage. Small, capable, subtle. The character isn't loud; it's specific. Real black, punchy highlights, sharp but not oversharpened, and a bimodal LUT that changes when the flash fires. It's the closest thing on the AFTERHOURS shelf to a "just a good compact camera" experience.
Slow-sync fusion
The distinguishing behaviour: dual-exposure slow-sync. When you press the shutter with flash on, the camera fires an ambient exposure roughly 200 milliseconds before the flash burst, holds both frames, and fuses subject-from-flash over background-from-ambient at develop time. Real 2010s pocket compacts did this. It's how you shoot the classic "subject in front of a sunset" or "subject in front of a lit bar" without either losing the background or blowing the subject out.
A filter cannot produce a slow-sync composite. It only has one finished frame to work with. G8X MIII takes two.
The un-iPhone signature
Modern iPhone captures apply a small shadow lift by default — keeps midtones bright, flattens contrast a little. G8X MIII sets gamma to 1.0 and pedestal to 0. Real black. It's the specific difference that makes a photo look like it came off a compact rather than a phone, and it's why the "modern compact" character reads correctly.
Highlight roll-off is late-digital (knee 0.99) — highlights hold much longer than film would, but don't clip immediately.
